A "cut-away" is an extremely technical illustration of an item such as this V8, LS1 engine, a 3 dimensional drawing in which the metal appears to have been sliced away, exposing its workings. David Kimble is the best there is at this art form. It truly is art in that although it looks like an engineering drawing, Kimble does not draw to scale, but draws what looks best to him! He details each drawing and then air-brushes the color for the 3 dimensional effect.
Any good artist can paint an effective picture of a car or ship or whatever, but Kimble seems to have x-ray vision when he looks at the machinery he is to paint. The detail is incredible. The closer you look the more you can find, and Kimble loves the details. It was hard for me to get sufficient resolution with the pictures that follow.
This drawing is the Ferrari F40 that Kimble has on his business cards.

Click on this picture to the left for a close up of the detail that goes into this work.

If you want to see something besides automobiles and engines, then click on this picture of the Enterprise that Kimble created for StarTrek, the Motion Picture. I have seen pictures that Kimble has done on trucks, tractors, firearms, ships, shopping centers, casinos, factories, jukebox and trains.
